Drug Uses
Imodium is used for treating and controlling diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea, and reducing the volume of discharge from an ileostomy (a surgical opening in the wall of the intestines). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Use Imodium as directed by your doctor. To avoid stomach upset take Imodium with a meal. It is recommended to drink extra fluids while you are taking Imodium and while you have diarrhea. Do not use for more than 2 days unless directed by a doctor.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Imodium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Imodium, if you have liver disease, infectious diarrhea, or other bowel problems (eg, ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, blockage, enlarged colon), if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. - If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Imodium during pregnancy. It is unknown if Imodium is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while using Imodium. Some medicines may interact with Imodium. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Imodium if you have dysentery or bloody diarrhea with high fever, have stomach pain without diarrhea, or if the patient is a child younger than 2 years of age. If your diarrhea does not improve within 48 hours or if you develop a fever, stop using Imodium and contact your doctor. Imodium is used to treat the symptoms of diarrhea, but will not treat the condition causing the diarrhea. Check with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about the cause of your diarrhea. Imodium may cause dry mouth. Chew sugarless gum or suck sugarless hard candy to reduce this effect. Imodium is not recommended for use in children younger than 1 year old. Use Imodium with extreme caution in children 1 to 18 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
When used in small doses, no common side effects have been reported with this product. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), bloating, blood in the stools, constipation, decreased urination, difficulty breathing, fever, nausea, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, stomach swelling, sudden abdominal pain or discomfort, swelling of the throat, vomiting.

Storage
Store Imodium at 59 – 86 °F (15 – 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Imodium out of the reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Imodium overdose are- constipation, drowsiness or deep sleep, nausea, slow pulse, slowed breathing, vomiting.

More Information
Imodium may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may worsen if Imodium is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Imodium with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Imodium should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
